Youth activist Sandra McIntyre to run for Fine Gael in Cavan-Monaghan
14th January 2019 - Fine Gael Press Office
Former Foróige Chair Sandra McIntyre is joining Fine Gael’s General Election ticket in the Cavan-Monaghan constituency.
Ms McIntyre is currently the Vice-Chairperson of the National Council of Foróige and previously served a two-year term (2016 – 2018) as Chairperson of the organisation.
Ms McIntyre was added to the constituency ticket at the weekend at a meeting of Fine Gael’s Executive Council. She will run alongside Minister Heather Humphreys and Senator Joe O’Reilly.
Ms McIntyre, from Templeport, Co Cavan, said, “I am delighted and honoured to have been asked to run as a Fine Gael candidate in Cavan-Monaghan in the next General Election.
“I’m really looking forward to the challenge and to getting into all areas of the constituency and listening to the people of Cavan and Monaghan to learn more about the challenges they face and the issues that are important to them.
“I have been a volunteer with youth organisation Foróige for the last 14 years and have had the honour of being the organisation’s National chairperson for a two year term. I want to use the experience I have gained as Chairperson, of a leading NGO, to become a relentless advocate of the people of Cavan and Monaghan,” Ms McIntyre said.
“I continue to be actively involved because I enjoy being a part of the development of young people. I have successfully secured funding from Peace IV to run Foróige’s leadership programme with young people from Northern Ireland.
“I am a passionate champion of gender equality and I believe Ireland will be a better place for having more women involved in politics. I’m heartened that as a country we’re having this important conversation.
“I am a very proud native of Cavan. I’ve lived in the county all my life and I do believe that Cavan needs a Government TD to champion our people, our county and our communities,” Ms McIntyre said.
