We’re still being codded by Dublin take away menus – Noone
23rd January 2014 - Sarah Meade
Dublin Senator, Catherine Noone, has today (Thursday) voiced her concerns about the continuing practice in Dublin takeaways of mislabelling fish as cod, when it is another fish altogether. Senator Noone was speaking after a survey showed that 41% of fish labelled cod was another species.
“Many of us love nothing more than fish and chips every now and then, and when we order cod, we expect to get it, not another, cheaper fish. Take-away owners must be honest about their labelling if they want to keep the trust of their loyal customers.
“Cod has become more expensive in recent years, and as a result takeaways can get away with charging a premium. But the fact that in four out of ten cases it’s another type of fish is simply unacceptable.
“The worst part of all of this is that this is actually a follow-up study – the original results were published four years, when 50% of cod was shown to be mislabelled. This follow-up study shows that the vast majority of takeaways haven’t changed their ways.
“Customers should feel confident that they are eating exactly what they ordered. I would also call on industry bodies to play their part and work to actively eradicate this practice.”
