Travel fares should be reduced for all young adults in Budget 2025 – Byrne

22nd September 2024 - Senator Maria Byrne

The Young Adult Card Fare reduction should continue until age 30, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Maria Byrne, a Fine Gael General Election candidate for Limerick City, is calling for the introduction of a tapered travel discount for young adults in the upcoming Budget, suggesting a gradual reduction of the current 50% discount as individuals move into their late 20s.

“The expansion of the Young Adult Travel Card in last year’s Budget was a huge step forward, allowing those aged 18 to 25, as well as full-time third-level students aged 16 and above, to travel at half price on all participating services.

“This has made Ireland one of the most affordable public transport countries in Europe for young people.

“However, as people move out of full-time education and enter the workforce, it’s reasonable to taper this discount.

“I’m proposing a graduated reduction: keeping the 50% discount until age 25, reducing it to 25% for ages 26-28, and then offering a 10% discount for those aged 29-30.

“This allows us to continue supporting young people as they transition into their careers while gradually shifting towards full-price travel.

“We can continue the positive impact fare initiatives like the Young Adult Card, Student Leap Card, and the 90-minute-fare have had on individuals’ travel costs and on the country’s environmental goals.

“These initiatives are not just about reducing the financial burden on young people—they’re also key to our collective efforts to lower transport emissions and reduce congestion in cities and towns.

“The average fare reduction of 20% for all adults on PSO services, along with the extended youth discount, has helped make public transport a more attractive option for everyone.

“By tapering the discount, we can continue to encourage young adults to use public transport as they grow older, while also ensuring that the scheme remains sustainable in the long term.

“It’s a balanced approach that continues to support young people while managing the costs involved.”
