Transport committee to review operation of Go Safe vans – O’Donovan
10th December 2014 - Aoife Carragher
“An Oireachtas Transport Committee review of Go Safe vans will examine why so many speeding cases have been dismissed and how best to ensure fairness and equity for all motorists” says Fine Gael TD for Limerick and Member of the Oireachtas Transport Committee, Patrick O’Donovan. The Oireachtas Transport Committee has accepted Deputy O’Donovan’s request to review the operation of Go Safe vans in light of the large number of cases that have been dismissed recently.
“Only last week, cases involving Go Safe vans in Cavan and Monaghan were dismissed and last month cases were also dismissed in Clare and in Limerick.
“It is clear that the system is not working at the moment. There are questions around the issuing of notices, as well as the location of vans and I believe that these, and other issues, need to be discussed in detail.
“I recently raised this issue following media reports from court sittings in County Limerick and today, as part of the Oireachtas Transport Committee’s work, I’ve asked that a full review of the Go Safe system take place. I proposed that this review should include the Departments of Justice and Transport, the Garda Síochána, the operators of the Go Safe vans, together with legal practitioners who will be invited to come before the Committee. I have asked that this would commence as soon as possible so as to make sure that confidence is restored in the system.”
