Toll charge increases ignore reality of daily commutes – Tolan
29th October 2024 - Fine Gael Press Office
Increases in toll charges on the National Road Network are unjustified and burdensome for commuters, a Fine Gael election candidate has said.
Cllr Sharon Tolan, Fine Gael Candidate for Meath East said: “The toll increase announcement is deeply concerning for the people of Meath East and beyond.
“In an era where many are already struggling with the rising cost of living, adding extra financial pressure through increased toll charges is simply unjustifiable.
“The adjustments, set to take effect on January 1, 2025, include a 10-cent increase per journey on the M4 motorway and additional charges for southbound vehicles using the Dublin Port Tunnel during peak hours.
“While the rationale provided is based on the annual CPI inflation rate, these increases ignore the reality of daily commutes.
“Many residents are spending longer than ever in traffic, with no significant improvements to the flow of vehicles on these roads. Instead of easing congestion, these toll increases will only serve to frustrate commuters further.
“It is clear that the current system is failing to address the real issues at hand, and it’s time for a re-evaluation of how we manage our transportation infrastructure.
“While toll revenue is undoubtedly important for maintaining our road network, it should not come at the expense of everyday drivers who rely on these routes for work and family commitments.
“The Minister for Transport may not have a formal role in setting these tolls, but it is imperative that we demand accountability and transparency in how these fees are managed.
“Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) must reconsider these increases and engage in a meaningful dialogue with local communities about their transportation needs.
“We need a transport strategy that genuinely addresses the challenges faced by commuters, rather than imposing further financial burdens without justification,” she concluded.
