Taoiseach welcomes Northern Ireland Economic Package

The Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D., warmly welcomed the Northern Ireland Economic Package agreed between the British Prime Minister David Cameron and First Minister Peter Robinson and deputy First Minister Martin McGuinnesss announced in London this afternoon.

Speaking after the announcement, the Taoiseach said:

“This is a very welcome development coming so soon after publication of the “Together: Building a United Community” Strategy for Good Relations by the Northern Ireland Executive recently.

These initiatives are important milestone developments in delivering the forward-looking, prosperous and reconciled society we all wish to see in Northern Ireland.

Taken together they send a very strong message that Northern Ireland is open for business, focusing on the steps needed to succeed in a competitive global economy, while also tackling divisions within the community.

The agreement is a symbol of the Northern Executive’s ambitious vision for a genuinely shared society that can fulfil its economic potential and strengthen the foundations for continued peace, stability and prosperity for the future.

I warmly congratulate the First and deputy First Ministers on what they have secured for the people of Northern Ireland and encourage them to continue to work together to leverage further opportunities from this innovative package.

I also look forward to further North-South cooperation as part of our continued efforts to improve relations and opportunities for all.
