Support our Defence Forces with new Appreciation Day – Callaghan
18th September 2024 - Fine Gael Press Office
Government should give consideration to introducing a National Day of Appreciation for the Permanent Defence Forces (PDF), a Fine Gael General Election Candidate has said.
Catherine Callaghan, Fine Gael General Election Candidate for Carlow-Kilkenny and former member of the Defence Forces is calling on the Government to establish a National Day of Appreciation for PDF as part of a comprehensive plan to demonstrate how the duties carried out by serving members are valued.
“It’s not just about solving the challenges they face; it’s about shining a light on all the positive contributions they make to Ireland. We have a lot to be proud of when it comes to our Defence Forces—from their peacekeeping work abroad to the support they provide during national crises.
“A day dedicated to them would bring that recognition to the forefront and give them the respect they’ve earned.
“As a former Defence Forces member, I know firsthand the dedication, skill, and sacrifice required to serve our country. These are not small tasks—they’re essential, and they deserve to be celebrated.
“That’s why I’m calling on the Government to address this growing issue by introducing a National Day of Appreciation for our serving and former members of the Defence Forces.
“Some might say that a simple act like this won’t make much of a difference, but I can tell you from my experience as a Special Needs Assistant (SNA) that it absolutely can. Ireland’s first National Day of Appreciation for SNAs, scheduled for September 26th, has already given a huge morale boost to my colleagues and myself.
“Just knowing that our work is recognised and valued has made all the difference, and I believe a similar initiative for the Defence Forces would have a similar effect.
“It’s a small step in addressing a larger problem, but our Defence Forces deserve more than just fair pay—they deserve our respect and appreciation for the sacrifices they make in service of our country.
“A National Day of Appreciation would be a powerful step towards showing them that we recognise and value their contribution to Ireland.” Callaghan concluded.
