Students can prove their strength in numbers by voting in the Children’s Referendum

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal, Alan Farrell is urging students to use this weekend’s Children’s Referendum as an opportunity to demonstrate the significance of the student vote and play their part in changing of the Constitution.

“The Children’s Referendum will be the first time in ten years that students who live away from home will have a realistic opportunity to cast their vote.

“They are the largest group to benefit from Saturday voting, which has been consistently called for over the years from student groups and their representatives.

“This weekend’s poll will be this generation of student’s first opportunity to prove the positive impact that weekend voting can have on voter turnout, particularly amongst students and those who work away from home during the week.

“Statistically, students don’t vote in large numbers. Saturday is their chance to change these statistics to ensure they are a force to be reckoned with.

“The last poll was held at the weekend voter turnout was quite low. However, times have changed dramatically and I believe students are engaged politically now more than ever.

“I am urging students’ unions to encourage their members to make their vote count on Saturday, November 10^th and to prove that the student vote can have as much of a significant impact on politics as any other group in society.”
