Statement by Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin on the passing of journalist Michael O’Regan
19th February 2024 - Brendan Griffin TD
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Michael O’Regan. He was a kind and decent man, and a brilliant journalist and broadcaster. But my thoughts today are with his family and friends, who will miss him immensely.
Michael was a voice of sense and reason in an often crazy political world. Gone far too young, he was a giant in Irish political discourse who always stayed in touch with the ordinary people.
His work as a journalist over many decades has helped shape this country for the better, and his wit and sharp analysis brought politics to the people, especially to the people of Kerry via his weekly “Call from the Dáil” slot on Radio Kerry every Friday morning. His was a household voice throughout the Kingdom, and one that people respected and loved to hear at every opportunity.
Personally, I’ll never forget him for taking the time to stop and chat in the corridors of Leinster House in my early days in Dáil Éireann, imparting his wisdom and knowledge to a young and slightly daunted TD “from the other side of the mountain”.
Rest in peace and thank you, Michael, a great Kerryman. Politics in Kerry and Ireland just won’t be the same without you.
