South Dublin schools excel at Young Scientist Exhibition

Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, Peter Mathews, has congratulated local schools for their excellent contribution to the Young Scientist Exhibition. Two schools from the Dublin South constituency were awarded prizes for their contributions.

“Once again, schools from Dublin South have excelled in the Young Scientist Exhibition. I visited the exhibition last Friday and was amazed at the number of entrants from the local area. It is a credit to the schools, the teachers and the students themselves. I was astounded by the quality and variety of the projects on show. They ranged from a study of classmates’ dreams by St Killian’s German School to a statistical analysis of sports results by Wesley College.

“Kate Brayden and Sian Roberts-Walsh of Loreto College, Foxrock, Co Dublin won first prize in the Intermediate Group of Biological and Ecological Sciences for their project which investigated the effects of monosodium glutamate (MSG) on brain cell lines and intestinal cells.

“Aisling Callaghan, Ella Connaughton and Sarah Egan of Mount Anville Secondary School won third prize in the Senior Group of the Social and Behavioural Sciences for their project, ‘The Power of Suggestion’.

“The atmosphere at the event was electric and it was inspirational to see the effort that so many young people put into projects that were often very complex. Not only did these students showcase their scientific skills, but also their innovation and creativity. At a time when maths and science skills are increasingly in demand, it is encouraging to see so many young people engage with these subjects and explore their own ideas.”
