Sinn Féin’s alternative Budget full of gimmicks – McGahon
26th September 2024 - Senator John McGahon
Sinn Féin’s grand financial plan for the country is for higher taxes on luxury cars and first class jet tickets, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Senator John McGahon and Fine Gael General Election candidate for Louth, said all proposals no matter where they come from should be considered ahead of the Budget but added the main Opposition party was sadly lacking in terms of originality and design.
“A tax on first class jet tickets and a tax on luxury vehicles is what Sinn Féin offered us this morning. Is that it?
“Those ideas have been offered repeatedly from different sources over the years. Is that all the main Opposition party can come up with?” Senator McGahon said.
“Commercial airlines, who may or may not have had plans to introduce first class fares, will be left shuddering in their boots at what Sinn Féin is proposing this morning.
“It is pure budget gimmickry and shows Sinn Féin aren’t a serious party of Government.
“Have Sinn Féin or Pearse Doherty not got anything else they can offer us?
“What is being offered from Mary Lou McDonald’s party is a scatter gun approach and a smash and grab strategy. It is completely reckless and won’t get the country or our economy too far,” Senator McGahon said.
