Same-sex couples being legally able to declare parentage is welcome news – Buttimer
27th June 2018 - Senator Jerry Buttimer
Cork Senator and Leader of Seanad Éireann, Jerry Buttimer, has said the move by Ministers Harris and Zappone to close a legal loophole and allow same-sex couples to legally declare parentage is a step in the right direction for our society.
Senator Buttimer said: “I am very pleased that the Government has moved to allow same-sex couples to seek a retrospective declaration of parentage.
“This means that children raised by same sex couples will be able to have their parentage officially recognised. This is a step in the right direction for our society.
“This is a very important issue as we seek to end discrimination towards same-sex families. This new legislation will mean that all families are equal under the eyes of the law,” the Fine Gael Senator said.
