Roscommon Hospital the perfect location for a Regional Rehabilitation Centre – Feighan
5th May 2013 - Daniel Rowan
Fine Gael TD for Roscommon/South Leitrim, Frank Feighan, has welcomed the proposals to locate a Western Regional Rehabilitation Centre at Roscommon County Hospital.
“The decision to locate a Western Regional Rehabilitation Centre at Roscommon County Hospital makes perfect sense given that the hospital has become a leading example for the future role of small hospitals in the country.
“I have already helped secure a €15 million investment package for the hospital, which includes an Endoscopy Suite, plans for a Palliative Care Centre along with the development of a range of other services. Accordingly, I believe that the development of a Rehabilitation Centre serving the West will ensure that Roscommon Hospital will be a shining example for the future role of small hospitals in this country.
“The National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dún Laoghaire is the only comprehensive rehabilitation facility in the Republic for patients with physical and cognitive impairments. Unfortunately, there are no dedicated rehab units in the West and I have highlighted the serious deficiencies in such services in the region with the Minister for Health, Dr. James Reilly TD.
“Minister Reilly is abundantly aware of the need to address these shortcomings and the National Rehabilitation Hospital also fully supports the development of regional rehabilitation services. Thankfully, progress is being made and I look forward to the pending appointment of a Consultant in Rehabilitation Medicine, to be based at Roscommon Hospital.
“From a geographical perspective, Roscommon Hospital is ideally located, being so central to the West and to Dublin. The next phase, which is being actively explored, is a capital development to be located on the grounds of the hospital.
“I am very positive that a standalone Regional Rehabilitation Centre can be developed at the Roscommon Hospital and I will be using my influence at the highest level to support the ongoing efforts on the ground.”
