Pyrite remediation scheme extended as pyrite discovered in homes in both Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and South Dublin – Mitchell
5th February 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office
Olivia Mitchell, Fine Gael TD for Dublin South, welcomes the Government’s announcement to extend the pyrite remediation scheme to include homes located in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown and South Dublin.
“We are all familiar with the pyrite problem which affected estates from North Dublin to Meath, but to the shock of residents, it emerged last year that a small number of homes located in an estate in South Dublin and a development in Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown were similarly affected by significant pyrite damage.
“The pyrite remediation scheme was set up to deal with the damage arising from the presence of significant levels of pyrite in the sub-floor hardcore, but its application was initially restricted to homes in Dublin City, Fingal, Kildare, Meath and Offaly.
“Last October, I asked the Minister for Environment, Alan Kelly, to amend the pyrite remediation scheme to include the Southside homes. This is a scheme of last resort. There are no other practicable financial options available to homeowners whose homes contain pyrite.
“I welcome the extension of the scheme which I hope will offer the affected homeowners a reasonable and sustainable solution to this difficult problem which needless to say is a source of huge stress for them.
“The amended pyrite remediation scheme will be available from the Board’s website shortly at www.pyriteboard.ie”.
