Proposed closure of Finglas East Post Office is short sighted and unacceptable – Rock

An Post’s proposal to close Finglas East Post Office is unacceptable and a grave concern to local residents, a Fine Gael TD has said.

The post office, located in Spar on Glasnevin Avenue, saw specialised investment of over €100,000 just five years ago in order to protect against burglaries, and is one of the busiest post offices in the area.

Dublin North West TD, Noel Rock, said: “I am deeply concerned about the proposed closure of the post office on Glasnevin Avenue, which will have a knock on affect to local residents in Finglas East.

“The postmistress has been forced to retire in November for personal reasons and I believe An Post is being opportunistic in proposing a closure of the office without regard to any strategy.

“I have met with Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughton on this matter and will be continuing my discussions with senior An Post management in coming days on this.

“I believe it is crucial that the Minister is aware of the facts surrounding the post office in question.

“These include the fact that according to recent figures, the Finglas East post office has one of the highest footfall figures of any of the local offices.

“The Finglas East Post Office is as safe as a post office can be, having been built from the ground up – at a cost of over €100,000 – to accommodate the post office with the highest security standards.

“It is no coincidence that since this rebuild, it has suffered zero robberies. Finally, there is interest from other parties to take over the services provided at this post office.

“These alone should be enough to prevent this needless closure which will be affect a large number of local residents.

“I am not taking this matter lying down, I have had discussions with the owners, the postmistress, An Post themselves, and the Minister.

“I will be fighting this proposal tooth and nail. I have launched a full campaign on this on Monday – which has seen 2,400 people sign a petition on this in 72 hours – and would urge people to join my campaign to save services and protect our community”.
