Postal route services to Australia, New Zealand and Singapore to resume next week – Brophy

Minister for Diaspora urges Irish families to send cards and gifts earlier to avoid disappointment

27th September 2020 - Colm Brophy TD

A number of international postal route services are set to resume next week, having faced disruption during the Covid-19 crisis. Services to Australia, New Zealand and Singapore will commence again on September 29th. Parcel service delivery to the United States will also resume on this date.

Minister for Overseas Development Aid and Diaspora Colm Brophy TD said, “I know that the news that that all mail services to Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United States are to resume next week will be a source of great relief to the many Irish families who have sons, daughters, brothers, sisters and other relatives and friends living away from home.

“The past six months have been a very strange and anxious time for all of us. Not being able to send or receive a card of gift to or from someone living overseas who we’re close to has been hard for many people.

“Ireland has in the region of 1.5 million citizens living outside the state, scattered in all parts of the globe. This year, more than any other, it’s important that we stay in touch with them and let them know that even though they are not here, they are part of us.

“I would urge people to support our postal service and our diaspora around the world and if you plan to send a thought or gift from home, check in with An Post and do it early.

“Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the number of countries An Post can send mail to is changing daily. Although An Post is still accepting and processing as much mail as possible, people should expect some delays. Similarly, if people are expecting international mail, they should allow more time than usual for delivery. Although our postal service’s international partners are working to maintain services, many of the international links used to bring mail to Ireland are experiencing significant disruption or delay.”

“There are also internal delays in a number of countries, including Spain, France and Luxembourg, so I would advise people to check the An Post website for daily updates on the countries that An Post is dispatching mail to, so that you can plan for any potential delays.

“I know our postal service is working tirelessly to ensure we stay connected, but this year is one like no other”, Minister Brophy concluded.
