John Clendennen, TD

John was elected as a TD in November 2024. Since then, Eleanor Clendennen has replaced him on Offaly County Council.

John was first elected to Offaly County Council in 2014. He has been elected to the Council on three occasions. He is married to Elaine, and they have a two-year-old son.

John qualified with a degree in Business Studies and Hotel Management from Shannon College of Hotel Management 2004, and has a Master’s Degree in Marketing from UCD Michael Smurfit School of Business.

John returned to Kinnitty in 2010, and where he has advanced his family business, Giltraps Pub, Townhouse & Glamping. He takes great satisfaction in developing his local area and taking a leading role in economic development and job creation. He has won several awards over the years, most recently winning the ‘Judges Award – Special Contribution to the Industry’ at the Midlands Hospitality Awards 2023.

John is President of the Vintners Federation of Ireland, elected by the members to represent the views of over 3,500 publicans nationwide. His work with the federation involves regular engagement with government ministers in formulating national policy impacting the hospitality, tourism and SME sectors.

As a councillor, he worked tirelessly for the development and progression of services and infrastructure across Offaly, assisting many community and volunteer groups and has served as Leas-Cathaoirleach of Offaly County Council in 2018

John is focused on creating further opportunity and job creation, through the betterment of the SME sector and attracting foreign direct investment to the county. Starting a family has given John a new perspective on life and highlighted the need for better social care, childcare and facilities whilst ensuring equality for all among our future generations.

He is fully committed to delivering Just Transition, reducing red tape and supports for the agricultural sector in light of climate change, the enhanced provision of community, sport and recreational facilities, the delivery of affordable and social houses, tackling dereliction in our communities and improving connectivity and roads infrastructure across Offaly.
