Senator John McGahon
John was elected as a Member of Seanad Éireann in March 2020 on the Cultural and Educational Panel and was subsequently appointed as Spokesperson for Climate Action, Communications, Energy and Natural Resources.
Her serves on both the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action and the Committee on Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
Prior to this, John served for six years as a member of Louth County Council. First elected at 23 years of age in 2014 he was re-elected in 2019 on the first count for the Dundalk-Carlingford LEA.
He was elected Cathaoirleach of the Dundalk Municipal District in 2017/18 and 2019/20.
Born and raised in Dundalk, he is a nephew of former Louth TD Brendan McGahon.
John was educated at Dundalk Grammar School and University College Dublin where he obtained a BA Honours Degree in History and Politics.
If elected, John wants to see the rate of building homes in Dundalk increase, along with ensuring that Dundalk and Louth are the epicentre of the M1 Corridor between Dublin and Belfast.
He will continue his work championing the improvement of cancer services in Louth.
John also wants to help deliver a new primary and secondary school for Blackrock, Louth’s fastest growing community, and Technological University status for Dundalk Institute of Technology.
