James Geoghegan, TD

James was elected as a TD in November 2024; he has been replaced on Dublin City Council, by David Coffey, who was co-opted in December.

First elected in 2019, and re-elected in 2024, James Geoghegan, 38, served as a Councillor for the Pembroke electoral area in the Dublin Bay South constituency. He was elected as Lord Mayor of Dublin in June 2024. James has also been selected as a candidate in Dublin Bay South, for the next General Election.

He grew up in Ranelagh and now lives in Clonskeagh with his wife Claire, and three small children – Hugh (6), Harry (4) and Lila (2).

As Fine Gael group leader on Dublin City Council, James focussed on:

  • Delivering an inclusive society where everyone can own a home, voting in favour of the development of over 3,000 homes by Dublin City Council.
  • Sustainable development in the areas of childcare, education, recreational facilities, and village improvements.
  • New pitches in Darty for local GAA club, Ranelagh Gaels and securing the inclusion of Donnybrook in the Citywide Development Plan for village enhancements.
  • Working closely with local Gardaí in tackling anti-social behaviour, burglaries, and theft through the Southeast Joint Policing Committee.
  • Delivering almost €2 million worth of grants for sports, cultural and community projects for the Sandymount and Ringsend area, including Clanna Gael and Railway Union, through the Community Gain Liaison Committee
  • Championing initiatives to support neurodiverse and autistic people across the city.

Geoghegan serves on the Housing Strategic Policy Committee and the Southeast Inner City Drugs Taskforce.

He is a practising barrister with a particular focus on Public and Constitutional law, as well as civil proceedings related to crime.  He is also a board member of the National Maternity hospital.
