Senator Jerry Buttimer

Jerry Buttimer is a Senator in the 26th Seanad. In December 2022 he was appointed as the Cathaoirleach of Seanad Éireann. He also previously served as Leader of the 25th Seanad. Jerry was previously elected to Dáil Éireann in February, 2011 representing the constituency of Cork South Central. He was previously appointed as Chairperson of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children in July 2011. Prior to his election to Dáil Éireann, Jerry served as a Senator, having been elected in July 2007, and was a member of Cork City Council from 2004 to 2007. Senator Buttimer is also the founder of Fine Gael LGBT and Party Spokesperson on Transport.

Under Senator Buttimer’s stewardship the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Health and Children held a series of meetings examining the misuse of alcohol and other drugs. This process culminated in the publication of a report which detailed a series of recommendations for tackling these complex issues. He has also led the Committee’s consultation process on the Children First Bill which puts in place a statutory framework to protect children and combat child abuse and neglect. Futhermore, Senator Buttimer was closely involved in the Protection of Life During Pregnancy Act Bill which led to the Citizens Assembly meetings in 2017-2018.

Outside of representative politics Senator Buttimer is actively involved in his local community and the GAA. He served on the GAA National Marketing Committee, as well as holding the position of Chairman of his local Bishopstown GAA Club.
