Cllr Alan Harney

Cllr Alan Harney

Alan was elected as a Councillor in June 2024, on his first attempt.

Alan is the son of Seamus and Maura Harney of Glentaun, Creagh, Ballinasloe. He was educated at Creagh National School and Garbally College and studied law in Trinity College Dublin.

He has significant political experience as he worked for former Senator Maura Hopkins for a number of years. During this time, he worked with many local groups and organisations and communities across the Ballinasloe electoral area, as well as assisting many individuals with their queries.

Following his time working in Leinster House, Alan returned to law, qualifying as a solicitor.

Over the years he has been an active member of many clubs and community organisations in Ballinasloe. He is currently:

  • a member of the Ballinasloe Town Hall Theatre committee
  • the Treasurer of Garbally College Past Pupils Union
  • a member of the Ballinasloe Tourism Collective, and
  • a Youth Leader with the Clonfert Diocesan Lourdes Pilgrimage

Alan is passionate about the future of our area. There is a significant untapped potential in the development of our towns and villages. There are many fantastic groups locally working to enhance our area. If elected, one of his priorities will be to support the work of these groups and deliver greater capital investment for all communities locally. Alan’s extensive experience in securing grant support and delivering community projects will give our locality an advantage in securing funding.

Alan’s experience in community development has led him to believe that we need an experienced, proactive, and positive voice for our community. This is why he is putting himself forward for election. Alan can be that voice for the Ballinasloe Local Electoral Area and deliver for our community.
