New wastewater treatment plant will secure Cork’s water quality standards for the future – Collins
22nd September 2015 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael TD for Cork North West, Áine Collins, has welcomed the announcement of a new wastewater treatment plant for Cork, saying it will secure the future of Cork’s water quality standards. The plant is part of the €91 million Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project.
“The new wastewater treatment plant at Shanbally marks a major upgrading of water treatment in Cork. This is part of a €91 million Cork Lower Harbour Drainage Project, something that is really crucial for the future of water treatment in Cork.
“People are now starting to see the benefit of Irish Water as an entity. This kind of investment in Cork’s water treatment simply wouldn’t have been possible without the extra investment brought about by water charges.
“Last year, Irish Water invested €340 million in improving water and waste water services. This year alone, over €410 million will be invested.
“An added benefit of this project is that it will create 50 jobs during the construction phase which will have a positive knock on effect for the good for the local economy in Cork.”
