New Credit Union to service the Beara Peninsula to open today – Harrington
1st August 2014 - Fine Gael Press Office
Fine Gael TD for Cork South West, Noel Harrington today (Friday) welcomed the decision taken by the Board of Bantry Credit Union at their meeting last night, to provide Credit Union services for the people of the Beara Peninsula.
The decision by the Board of Bantry Credit Union to provide credit union services for the people of the Beara Peninsula is really welcome. The Board took this decision at their meeting last night and also agreed to open the office this morning for the purpose of opening accounts. The credit union will operate from the existing premises in Castletownbere.
“This represents the first stage in reinstating a fully functioning credit union presence in Castletownbere. It is a welcome and quick development following the winding up of Berehaven Credit Union by The Central Bank on Wednesday 23rd July last. Thankfully, 85% of the 3,500 members of that Credit Union received their savings, by cheque, just one week following the closure and the remainder will issue over the coming days.
“I am pleased to have been involved with all concerned to explore all possible options and to expedite a solution as quickly as possible for the people of Beara.”
