New Committee allows for greater focus on Agriculture during Irish Presidency of EU

9th June 2012 - Andrew Doyle TD

I thoroughly enjoyed my time as Chairman of the Joint Committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture. It was very interesting to deal with issues from the Communications, Energy and Natural resources portfolio. This was a very broad and wide ranging committee, it is therefore best to separate this committee to allow for proper time and consideration on important issues.
I’m delighted to be appointed as Chairman of the Joint Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine. These three sectors are crucially important to Ireland’s economic recovery and future growth.
‘It is significant timing in preparing for Irish Presidency of the EU which will allow for a greater focus on the importance of Irish agriculture. The presidency is a great opportunity for Ireland to lead the way in the CAP negotiations and as Chairman I look forward to being heavily involved in this task.’
‘The Committee will be focusing on supporting the expansion of the Ireland’s agri-food sector which already employees over 160,000 jobs and accounts for some eight per cent (8%) of GDP. The Committee will also be proactive in making the best use of our Forestry and Fishing resources for future development.
