Murphy welcomes upgrade of Inniscarra Water Treatment Plant

27th February 2013 - Deborah Sweeney

Fine Gael Cork North Central Deputy, Dara Murphy, has welcomed confirmation from the Minister for Environment, Community & Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, that Cork County Council’s proposals for the Inniscarra Water Treatment Plant and Sludge Treatment Upgrade contract have been approved.

Further works will take place in the form of the provision of an Activated Carbon Dosing System and the construction of additional Manganese Removal facilities as part of the overall upgrade.

“Ensuring that our drinking water is up to scratch is vital to the health of our people. It also plays a significant role in encouraging tourism, Ireland’s reputation as a ‘green’ island and Foreign Direct Investment to locate here.

“At an estimated €5.57million, this contract is part of the Department of the Environment’s Water Services Investment Programme 2010-2013, the aim of which is to ensure the maintenance of our plants and the delivery of a water service that meets our people’s needs.

“Cork County Council has already invested €186,115 in emergency work at the sludge facility, with a proposal in place to provide a sludge treatment plant to replace the existing temporary facility.

“The approval of these works will ensure good quality drinking water for those who rely on the water from Cork Harbour and the City Water Supply Scheme. It will also ensure that our facilities comply with Water Quality Directives and Drinking Water Regulations. Work will now commence on the preparation of contract documents with a view to seeking tenders as early as possible. I commend the Minister for the work he has done to progress these works and to ensure the water quality is maintained for the people of Cork.”
