Monaghan Council Cathaoirleach meets An Taoiseach in Government Buildings

7th July 2023 - Fine Gael Press Office

Monaghan County Council Cathaoirleach Cllr David Maxwell met with An Taoiseach and Fine Gael Party Leader, Leo Varadkar, in Government Buildings on Tuesday evening.

The Taoiseach, along with all of his senior Ministers, met with the 13 Fine Gael Councillors who have recently been elected as the first citizen of their county.

Councillor Maxwell, who was first elected in 2004, was previously elected as Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council in 2018.

He was elected as Cathaoirleach again in June and outlined his main priorities for his term.

“I will be highlighting to central Government the need for investment in Monaghan, especially in the area of our local road network with a special focus on the N2 Ardee to border road.

“I will also focus on the Ready to Build Scheme, where the local authority makes serviced sites in towns and villages available to potential individual purchasers or self-builders.

“These sites are available at a discount on the market value of the site for the building of a property for occupation as the principal private residence of the purchaser.”

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said: “I had a good two-hour meeting with Councillor Maxwell in Government Buildings on Tuesday evening to discuss the issues that matter to the people of Monaghan. The meeting gave Councillor Maxwell the opportunity to raise these issues directly with me. I committed to Councillor Maxwell to work on these issues.

“The need for more funding this year for local and regional road maintenance, a top up allocation for the Local Improvement Scheme and, in the coming years, funding to advance new road projects that are delayed, the urgent need to service much more land for housing were raised at the meeting. On energy security and climate, they impressed on me the need to increase aid to farmers, schools, community buildings and businesses to install solar panels and become energy efficient.

“I look forward to working with Councillor Maxwell and visiting Monaghan during his term as Cathaoirleach.”
