Mitchell joins An Taoiseach in calling for strong pro-European vote from Dublin South on 31st May

Dublin South registered highest Lisbon Yes vote in the country at 81.7%, hope of even stronger vote of support this time around

Fine Gael Dublin South Deputy, Olivia Mitchell, has joined An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, in calling for Dublin South voters to come out and reaffirm their traditional support for Ireland’s involvement in Europe by voting Yes on 31st May.

Chairing a public meeting in The Goat last night (Tuesday), Deputy Mitchell and An Taoiseach, called on Dublin South constituents, who have always strongly supported EU referenda, to come out in strong support of a Yes vote on 31st May.

Speaking after the event, Deputy Mitchell said: ‘Dublin South has often been referred to as a poll-topping constituency, in that support for EU referenda is generally very high. The highest levels of support of any constituency in European referenda is often recorded in Dublin South. Any volatility experienced at general election time has always been balanced with a traditionally strong, pro-European vote when it comes to European referenda’.

“At the last Lisbon vote, Dublin South registered the highest Yes vote in the country with 81.7% and I hope that we can see an improvement on this this time around. Lisbon mattered, but this Treaty matters more. I believe the voters of Dublin South appreciate this and I have been getting that reaction at the doors.

“The euro is now in a major financial crisis and now is not the time to take a chance with Ireland’s future prospects for recovery or to take a jump into the unknown as is being suggested by opponents of the Treaty. Now is the time for stability and certainty. Now is the time to vote Yes to the prudent and responsible behaviour set out in the Stability Treaty

“This is a time to play it safe and to let job creating investors know that Ireland is a safe bet for investment. We must avail of whatever safety net is being offered to us and is available to under the EU umbrella. A Yes vote will not solve the euro crisis and neither will it resolve our debt crisis. But it will help restore the conditions which are essential for the return of investor confidence, without which there can be no job creation which is so badly needed for our future recovery.

“I will be voting Yes on 31st May and I am calling on voters in Dublin South to uphold their record in recording a strong Yes vote when they go to the polls.”
