Minister Shatter commends Garda Síochána, Defence Forces and Civil Defence for assistance in flood affected areas in recent days

The Minister for Justice, Equality and Defence today complimented members of the Garda Síochána, Defence Forces and Civil Defence on their work throughout the country in the last few days.

Speaking after question time in Dáil Éireann, the Minister said “I would like to repeat the tribute that I paid in the House to all members of the Garda Síochána, Defence Forces and Civil Defence for their outstanding work in recent days. We have witnessed unprecedented levels of flooding combined with high tides in the last few days. I am extremely grateful to all of the full time and reserve members of the Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces and the Civil Defence who have been involved in providing assistance and helping members of the public cope with these terrible floods. It is a reminder to all of us of the vital public services they provide”.

By way of specific examples of this assistance:

· In response to a request from the local authority, assistance has been and will continue to be provided in Limerick by members of the Defence Forces. Six high wheeled trucks and 25 personnel were deployed each day.
· Members of the Garda Síochána remain on hand to support efforts to deal with the effects of the floods and to assist members of the public in difficulty.
· The Civil Defence are also providing invaluable support services to those who require them at this time.
