Minister for European Affairs Dara Murphy welcomes new Cork- Cardiff route

5th March 2015 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael, Cork North Central TD and Minister for European Affairs, Dara Murphy TD, has warmly welcomed today’s announcement by DAA Cork Airport, that UK airline Flybe will operate a new Cork – Cardiff route.

Minister Dara Murphy said:

“I would like to congratulate Niall MacCarthy and his management team at Cork airport for their success in winning this important new air bridge operated by Flybe, between Cork and Cardiff.
“Like all proud Cork citizens I am passionate about our local airport and particularly the critical role it plays in connecting Cork directly with the UK and Europe, which is a vital link for Cork businesses and tourism.

“I am also confident that Cork International airport will return to previous growth volumes, given Cork’s ever increasing population, employment levels, and expanding local economy which are driven by export orientated SME’s and international companies, based across our city and county.

“I know that the airport management will continue to fight for Cork, just this week travelling to the world’s largest travel fair in Berlin to promote Cork airport to major airlines and tour operators. It’s also great to see the return of CSA – Czech airlines to Cork, further improving our connectivity to Europe with new routes to Prague.

“Cork, as the second city, is ideally placed to benefit from Ireland’s export led economic recovery, particularly given the challenges faced by both indigenous and multinational businesses in finding suitable office space and the skills shortage in Dublin. Cork offers all the attractions of a vibrant, modern city in growth mode with excellent infrastructure and new office buildings in the city centre.”
