Minister Coffey busy legislative agenda in run-up to Christmas

8th December 2015 - Senator Paudie Coffey

Fine Gael Waterford Minister Paudie Coffey has had a very busy legislative period in the run up to Christmas.  Minister Coffey has been passing legislation in both the Dáil and the Seanad Chamber over the last number of weeks;  including critically important legislation regarding the current national housing situation.

“This week saw the passing of the residential tenancies amendment bill, that is a prudent and balanced approach taken by government, to address the current pressures on the private rental market until supply in the housing market is increased to meet demand.

“The main points of the bill are to extend the period of when a rent review can occur from 12 to 24 months; to extend notice periods on the ending of tenancies; on the other hand it gives landlords enhanced powers regarding anti-social behaviour; which strikes a fair balance in trying to correct a dysfunctional  market;” Minister Coffey stated.

“Over the last number of weeks; I have been involved in bringing this legislation through the Oireachtas which I hope will be enacted without further delay. I also brought an important motion before the Dáil that will incentivise the housing market where the need is most acute.  This motion will encourage the building of starter homes and will over time deliver much needed housing where it is needed most.

Minister Coffey said “I have also brought critical and ground-breaking Climate Change legislation through the houses of the Oireachtas; the first such bill in the history of the State.  This a commitment in the programme for government that has been delivered on.

“I will continue to work in my Ministerial role in the Department of Environment that is bringing forward progressive and positive legislation as well as my work in delivering for Waterford City and County; where I am working within government to deliver investment across Waterford.
