Military Authorities Confirm Personnel In Custume Barracks will remain at 1000

Longford/Westmeath James Bannon (FG) expressed his satisfaction at the news that the number of personnel serving at Custume Barracks in Athlone will remain in the order of 1000 strong.
Minister for Defence, (Alan Shatter TD) confirmed with recent re-organisation of the Permanent Defence Force from 3 Brigades to a 2 Brigade structure, and a strength figure for the Permanent Defence Foce as a whole of 9,500 he expected that the number of personnel serving in Custume Barracks will remain in the order of 1,000 personnel.
“Not alone is Custume Barracks an important operational military barracks in the midlands said Deputy Bannon but the stationing of 1000 military personnel plays an extremely important role in contributing to the local economy and community”.
