McEntee appointed to Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications
8th July 2013 - Sarah Meade
Fine Gael Meath East TD, Helen McEntee, has been appointed to the Oireachtas Committee on Transport and Communications. Deputy McEntee says she hopes to use her new role to scrutinise national policy and to further her work on a range of local issues, such as the Slane bypass, the deterioration of the roads throughout Meath and renewable energy.
“I am very pleased to have been appointed to the Transport and Communications Committee, as it will allow me to play a closer role in the scrutiny of national policy and legislation in a range of areas. This includes a number of issues that are of major importance in Meath, such as the condition of our roads and the on-going proposal of the Slane bypass.
“I have already become involved with many of the issues which fall under the Transport and Communications portfolios, particularly those with a local dimension. I have used my position on the Committee to engage with bodies such as the National Roads Authority (NRA). This week, Fred Barry, the Chief Executive of the NRA, was invited into the Committee to review the National Roads Programme. Having met with the Slane Bypass Group again last week, I questioned Mr. Barry on the NRAs current work on the bypass and I hope to meet with him and the group again soon to progress the next stages.
“Committees will play an even stronger role in our parliamentary democracy under new plans announced by the Government, which will allow for closer examination of legislation before it is published, and outside experts will be brought centre stage in the process. I look forward to working with the Committee on Transport and Communications in the coming Dáil session.”
