Legal challenges overcome as funding approved for N86 – Coghlan

6th January 2016 - Senator Paul Coghlan

Government Chief Whip in the Seanad, Paul Coghlan, has said that the approval of funding for works on the N86 marks a final end to ongoing legal challenges and a chance to develop one of Kerry’s most important routes.
“Transport Infrastructure Ireland is to invest €3.8 million in the upgrade of the N86 between Dingle and Annascaul, and from Gortbreagoge to Camp. This project had been subject to ongoing legal proceedings until the days before Christmas when the High Court rejected An Taisce’s appeal.
“Like most reasonable people in Kerry, I have always recognised the importance of projecting and maintaining the N86, one of the most important tourist routes in the country. However in the interests of safety and to prevent incidents in the future, it is vital that this route be upgraded.
“Throughout this long process Government has always guaranteed that the money is available to start this project as soon as possible. Now that the legal issues have been resolved, I am pleased that the confirmation of this funding has come so promptly.
“I am hopeful that works on the N86 will begin as soon as possible and that we can continue to develop the tourism offering here in Kerry.”
