Lack of students choosing languages will impact foreign competitiveness –D’Arcy
4th August 2014 - Aoife Carragher
Fine Gael Louth Senator and Seanad Spokesperson on Education, Jim D’Arcy, has today (Wednesday), called on students choosing subjects for the Leaving Certificate to consider languages.
“The fact that 27% of students chose Higher Level Maths and that results have improved in this subject is very positive, but I am concerned by the decline in numbers taking French and German over the past decade.
“49% of students chose French, while only 13% sat the German exam in 2014.This has implications for future foreign investment competitiveness in relation to companies such as PayPal and E-bay, and more generally in relation to marketing and communication needs.
“French and German are only two very useful languages, Spanish and Mandarin are also growing in importance and they represent huge opportunities of future employment for those with the correct skills.
“For those who got their results, today can be a difficult day for many and students should remember that they can have a bright future and go on to further education and training, if they so wish.
“There are amazing opportunities out there for all students. While those who achieved high results are to be congratulated, you don’t have to achieve an extraordinary result to move forward in education. There are many ways to get to your final destination and for those who are not sure yet of what they would like to do, a Post Leaving Certificate (PLC) Course in a Further Education College is a good option.
“This is a popular route for many of our entrepreneurs and risk-takers, who are vital for our economy. The new Education and Training Boards (ETB’s) and Solas are working very hard to ensure that Education & Training in this sector keeps up with modern demands.
“In Germany only 50% of students take the path of a third level degree, while a great many prefer the Further Education and Training System, which leads to wonderful career paths.
“There will be a chance later this month to see exam papers before deciding to appeal. All students who sat their exams at a school must apply for the free viewing service through their schools by Tuesday next 19th August. The scripts will then be available for viewing at the school on either Friday August 29th or Saturday 30th August.
“A helpline number 1800 265 165 is available for students with queries or concerns.”
