Keating welcomes upgrading of traffic system at key N4 junction in Palmerstown

23rd August 2013 - Derek Keating TD

Fine Gael TD for Dublin Mid-West, Derek Keating, has welcomed confirmation that the traffic management control system at the N4 Kennelford Road and M50 junctions in Palmerstown is due to be upgraded. The works are being allocated by South Dublin County Council, using monies provided to it by the Department of Transport.

“Having worked on this issue for a considerable time, I am delighted that South Dublin County Council has allocated this funding for the much needed upgrade of the traffic management control system at this key junction.

“Having met with the National Roads Authority and South Dublin County Council on numerous occasions about this issue I am aware that the existing system is out of date and was at risk of failing.

The impact of the traffic management control system failing to work at this junction would be severely felt not only in the local area, but also along the N4 and the nearby M50. I expressed my serious concern about delays in the necessary works being carried out to upgrade the traffic lights.

“I raised this this matter in the Dáil under a Special Notice Question to Minister Varadkar and received confirmation that a thorough inspection by NRA engineers would ensure that the system would be managed until replacement work commenced. We are now seeing the culmination of this process.

“The upgrade of the system is expected to be of significant benefit for traffic movement, particularly for the residents in Palmerstown and the wider area. It will also help improve the flow of traffic on the N4.

“The work is due to commence this Monday at a cost of over €300,000. The works should be completed within six weeks and no significant traffic impact to residents is anticipated. The overall outcome of the work will ensure that traffic management for the area will be enhanced greatly.”
