Is this the level of Micheál Martin’s diplomacy skills? – McEntee
30th January 2020 - Helen McEntee, TD
Micheál Martin’s ill-tempered attack on the European Trade Commissioner today demonstrates why he is not the right person to lead Ireland through the next phase of Brexit, Minister for European Affairs Helen McEntee has said.
Ms McEntee, a TD for Meath East, expressed her surprise and disappointment following Mr Martin’s unnecessary swipe at EU Trade Commissioner Phil Hogan.
Ms McEntee asked, “Is this the level of the Fianna Fáil leader’s diplomacy skills?”
“Phil Hogan has done a tremendous job as European Commissioner over the past five years, demonstrated by his recent appointment to the hugely important trade portfolio.
“Like over the past five years, Ireland knows that its voice and interest will once again be well represented at European level.
Ms McEntee added: “We are at a critical stage in Brexit – the halftime point. Phil Hogan was making the very valid and important point about the need to avoid any complacency in relation to the trade talks, as well the importance of stable government.
“Micheál Martin’s decision to personalise the matter today, in an ill-tempered attack on Commissioner Hogan, is disappointing. He is the only one trying to play politics with Brexit. The question needs to be asked: Is this the level of the Fianna Fáil leader’s diplomacy skills?”
