Introduce free HRT for all women in Budget 2025 – Byrne

Limerick City FG candidate says publicly funded HRT scheme would be a gamechanger for women’s health

25th September 2024 - Senator Maria Byrne

The Government should make Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) free for all women experiencing menopause, a Fine Gael Senator has said.

Senator Maria Byrne, Fine Gael General Election candidate for Limerick City said investment is needed to help women that are facing high medical costs associated with menopause.

“Currently, HRT is free for medical card holders, but many women without a medical card face costs ranging from €30 to €70 a month.

“This is on top of the cost of going to a GP which costs upwards of €50 per visit and in some cases, the cost of having to see a consultant.

“We have seen so many advocates dedicated to campaigning to make HRT freely available for all women and the last few months we have really seen this conversation being brought to the forefront.

“From talking to people on the ground we see just how much of a financial strain this is for so many women.

“No woman should be forced to choose between their health and an expense that could easily be addressed in the upcoming budget.

“HRT offers significant relief from the symptoms of menopause – hot flushes, mood swings, joint pain and can even lower the risk of long-term conditions like osteoporosis and heart disease.

“It’s not just about comfort; it’s about improving women’s overall health and well-being. So many women are suffering in silence and providing greater access will help so many people.

“Making HRT free for all women is a matter of fairness and equality.

“Budget 2025 is a chance for the Government to show real leadership in supporting women’s health. I’m confident that with continued momentum we can achieve this important change for women across Ireland”, concluded Senator Byrne.
