Hogan as Commissioner intent on supporting young farmers and reducing red tape – Fitzpatrick

3rd October 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, has strongly welcomed the proposed measures to support the farming sector as outlined by the European Agricultural Commissioner elect, Phil Hogan, during his confirmation hearing in Brussels.

“I am glad that we have an Agricultural Commissioner elect who understands farming and is committed to take practical measures to improve the lives of farmers in Ireland and around Europe.

“I welcome Mr Hogan’s signalled intent to take decisive measures to support the agri-food sector in a viable, sustainable manner. I fully support Mr Hogan’s stated intention to help young farmers. He will work with stakeholders to help young farmers obtain credit for co-financing requirements under EU measures. Our agricultural colleges are full and it is an exciting time for farming. Young farmers will be comforted that the Commissioner designate is keen to promote their cause.

“Mr Hogan has also promised to reduce the administrative burden being placed on farmers in relation to the CAP. Farmers and their spouses rightly point to the often unnecessary red tape involved in qualifying for CAP payments.

“It is difficult to overstate the importance of the portfolio that Phil Hogan is due to assume. He will be responsible for the EU’s agriculture budget which accounts for almost 40% of EU spending. There is no more basic requirement for the people of Europe than to have a secure, sustainable and high quality supply of food. It is vital that we maintain food security and the food surplus which we already have.”
