Hard work rewards as Cork-Boston route finally set to take off – Buttimer
23rd February 2017 - Senator Jerry Buttimer
Fine Gael Senator and Leader of Seanad Éireann, Jerry Buttimer, has expressed his delight at the launch of Norwegian Airlines transatlantic routes from Cork after a long and challenging journey to secure the service.
“This is very welcome news and a momentous occasion for not just for Cork Airport but for the Cork region and those who have lobbied so hard on both sides of the Atlantic. I would especially like to pay tribute to Managing Director Niall McCarthy and his team for their trojan efforts in securing a service that will drive unprecedented growth in inbound tourism to Cork from the US.
“When I met with Lieutenant Governor of Rhode Island Daniel J. McKee over the summer I made sure to emphasise that Cork Airport was at the fore in providing quality modern facilities and convenient customer services for passengers travelling for holidays and Business. I am delighted to see Cork Airport finally being recognised for its hard work.
“This is a great day for consumer choice and an affirmation of the Open Skies policy between EU & USA. Today’s announcement presents great opportunities to further grow tourism in Cork this year and in future years. It is critical that all stakeholders in Cork and throughout the South of Ireland engage in promoting Cork and these new routes. I firmly believe this will permanently transform Cork’s position as a gateway to the Wild Atlantic Way & Ireland’s Ancient East.
“I commend Norwegian Airlines for committing to Cork and bringing transatlantic travel routes to the Cork region. They will do for transatlantic travel what Ryanair has done for European travel, bringing lower fares, increased competition and growth to the overall market. Cork is uniquely positioned in Ireland as the gateway to both the Wild Atlantic Way & Ireland’s Ancient East. From a tourism marketing perspective it is critical the support is provided to support these direct US services with Norwegian along with other recent additions to Cork Airport.
“Cork Airport provides a friendly, convenient customer service in a modern terminal setting to Irish passengers travelling outwards on holidays or business.
“It is critical now that we support these Direct US Services with Norwegian along with other recent route additions to Cork Airport”.
