Future of Athy rugby is secure – Heydon

6th December 2019 - Martin Heydon TD

The future of one of the country’s oldest rugby clubs is safe after public insurance was secured, a Fine Gael TD has said.

Deputy Martin Heydon, Kildare South TD, said he welcomed confirmation from Athy RFC that they have agreed terms for public liability insurance cover.

“Since this issue was first raised with me last Monday evening, I have worked closely with club officers to assist them in the process to seek a solution, including facilitating and attending a meeting with Minister Michael Darcy on Tuesday.

“Athy RFC has a long and proud tradition across south Kildare for almost 140 years. I am determined the club will continue to thrive for future generations. It is a great facility and extremely important to all involved with the club, whether in a playing, volunteer or supporter capacity.

“I am delighted that all associated with Athy RFC can get back to focusing on the development of rugby in the area. I commend the volunteer committee and officers of Athy RFC who I worked closely with this week and will continue to do so into the future,” Deputy Heydon said.
