Funding for road works brings annual investment to over €14,000,000 in Fingal

1st June 2013 - Alan Farrell TD

Alan Farrell, Fine Gael TD for Dublin Fingal has said that Fingal County Council will receive extra government funding for local and regional road resurfacing, in addition to almost €14 million of grants allocated this year to the north county.

“To date in 2013, Fingal County Council has received almost €14 million for road projects and maintenance. This includes funding for vital infrastructure projects that will improve accessibility, safety and travel times throughout the north county, such as the Holywell Distributor Road, the Swords QBC upgrade, and the widening of the road from Drynam to Lissenhall, which received over €5 million from the National Roads Authority.

“€5 million was allocated for road restoration and repair grants, while another €4 million was granted for over 20 individual projects that will improve accessibility for all road users, such as pedestrian crossings, traffic ramps renewal, and cycle network schemes.

“This week the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport announced extra funds of up to €888,015 for Fingal, which is to go directly toward road resurfacing throughout the constituency and will be spent in 2013.

“Individual Local Authorities are the bodies responsible under law for the upkeep and maintenance of regional and local roads. This funding is to be used as a supplement for each local authorities own spending on road upkeep throughout the year.

“Government is aware that local authorities are making savings across the board, however this funding has highlighted the necessity for local authorities to continue to invest both local and regional local road infrastructure in order to ensure safety and accessibility for all road users.
