Funding approved for coastal erosion and flood management study at Rosses Point – McLoughlin

26th May 2015 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael TD for Sligo/Leitrim, Tony McLoughlin has welcomed the allocation of funding from the OPW to carry out a single coastal erosion and flood risk management study for the section of coastline from Deadman’s Point to Rosses Point (Lower) to include the Sand Spit.

“The Minister of State with responsibility for the OPW, Simon Harris last February accepted my invitation to visit Rosses Point Beach to see first-hand the effects that storm damage and coastal erosion are having on local communities. I am encouraged to see that the Minister has now allocated funding to carry out a study on coastal erosion and flood risk management in the area.

“Throughout 2014 I made several representations to the OPW about the need for funding to carry out repairs to the beach after the storms in December 2013. I also feel it is essential that we plan ahead and prevent further destruction as a result of future storms. That is what this study is about.

“The storms of 2013 have had a major impact on local families and businesses. I have brought these messages to Minister Harris and following his visit, I believe he recognises the need to address these issues.

“Rosses Point is an important tourist attraction in the area and it is vital that we repair and maintain this coastline.

“I look forward to hearing the findings of this study. I am sure there will be a number of recommendations, many of which will go a long way to addressing the concerns of all the people living near Rosses Point.”
