Fresh HSE probe into teenage death a welcome development – Conway
18th December 2023 - Senator Martin Conway
A fresh investigation into the death of a teenage girl at one of the country’s busiest hospitals is a welcome development, a Fine Gael Senator has said.
Senator Martin Conway was speaking after the Health Service Executive (HSE) announced a new investigation into the death of Aoife Johnston (16) at University Hospital Limerick (UHL) a year ago.
The HSE’s CEO Bernard Gloster made the announcement this evening.
Senator Conway said this is a very tragic case and the family of the Clare teen deserve answers as to what happened last December at the main hospital in the Mid-West Region when her family brought her there for treatment from her home in Shannon.
Senator Conway is Fine Gael’s Health spokesperson in the Seanad.
“This is a very tragic case and puts a lot of issues into perspective for everyone at this time of year.
“Aoife’s family have lived with her passing for the last 12 months and they deserve to know the circumstances of everything surrounding their experiences at UHL last December,” the Fine Gael Senator said.
“I hope this investigation, overseen by former Chief Justice Mr Justice Frank Clare, takes place in a speedy manner, and without any delays, so that the HSE can be best informed as to what should happen thereafter,” Senator Conway said.
