Frances Fitzgerald’s appointment as Minister for Justice is a great day for women in politics – Humphreys

8th May 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Fine Gael TD for Cavan and Monaghan, Heather Humphreys, has today (Thursday) welcomed the announcement by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD, that Frances Fitzgerald TD has been appointed as the new Minister for Justice.

“As a female politician working to get more women involved in politics and positions of leadership, I am delighted that Minister Frances Fitzgerald TD, has been appointed as the new Minister for Justice, one of the most senior government positions. This appointment means that we now have a full team of women in the department of Justice; the Attorney General, the Chief Justice, the DPP and the acting Garda Commissioner.

“As a woman in politics it is fulfilling to see a capable and hardworking politician climb up the ranks and be recognised for the work she has done. More women are needed in politics and Frances Fitzgerald’s career, in particular her appointment today as Minister for Justice, should be testament to other young women that politics is a field in which we can and do excel. It should encourage more women to get involved in politics and to be confident in their ability to take on roles of responsibility and high office.

“I want to pay tribute to the great work Minister Fitzgerald has done in her previous role as Minister for Children, she has been a ground breaking Minister and I am sure with such a strong track record, she will build on the radical agenda for legal change and statutory reforms.

“Frances Fitzgerald today joins an elite group of women who have taken on the role of Minister for Justice. I am confident that she will do an excellent job as she paves the way for other women to grow and progress in politics.”
