Fianna Fáil & Sinn Féin U-turn on Govt policies exposed – Harris

8th October 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Minister of State at the Department of Finance, Simon Harris, has this morning, called for Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil to outline which Government policies they now support following the appearance of both Finance representatives on Prime Time last night. The pre-budget submissions from both parties appear to generate funds from measures introduced by this Government but vehemently opposed by them at the time.

“Sinn Féin and Fianna Fáil consistently oppose Government measures but have sneakily built the savings made into their budget submission when they think nobody is looking. Do they think the public will be fooled by this hypocritical behaviour?

“On Monday I challenged Sinn Féin to explain how they would have saved €9.8 billion over the last three budgets, as this Government has. During the same period Sinn Féin’s proposals add up to just €4 billion in savings, leaving a shortfall of almost €6 billion. I was disappointed with Pearse Doherty’s failure to answer this question last night on Prime Time.

“And Fianna Fáil has adopted the same strategy: oppose Government decisions, many of which were very difficult for people to take, and then pocket the savings, when nobody is looking.

“Both Fianna Fáil and Sinn Féin have admitted to integrating Government measures that they originally opposed into their pre-budget submissions. Will they now clarify which, if not all, Government policies they actually support?”
