Feighan welcomes €12 million funding approval to upgrade Roscommon water schemes
4th November 2013 - Daniel Rowan
Fine Gael Roscommon/South Leitrim TD, Frank Feighan, has warmly welcomed the capital funding approval of €12 million for the construction of five new water treatment plants and one pumping station on the Arigna, Boyle/Ardcarne, Roscommon Central and South Roscommon Regional water Supply Schemes. The company which successfully tendered for the project was Glan Agua Ltd.
“Following my strong representations, I’m delighted that Minister for the Environment, Phil Hogan TD, travelled to Roscommon to make this announcement. This development will significantly address the water quality issues being experienced right across the county.
“As Minister Hogan has noted, the works will also provide for the provision of appropriate barriers to Cryptosporidium and treatment and disposal of any sludge and wastes generated.
“I am fully aware that the tender process and construction stages will involve certain timescales but once these upgrades are complete, it will finally bring to an end the constant boil water notices which have been a frustrating feature for many people and businesses in Roscommon. I continue to lobby for the progress the works required on the Castlerea water scheme.
“This major funding announcement reflects the commitment in the programme for Government that our public drinking water supplies will deliver a reliable service that is compliant with drinking water standards.
“Following this funding approval, I know Roscommon County Council will now move as quickly as possible to complete the contract formalities with the successful tenderer, Glan Agua Ltd, so that the works can start on these contracts as soon as possible.”
