Eircode, the new location for Irish addresses, will be a vital piece of national infrastructure – Noone

28th April 2014 - Aoife Carragher

Dublin Senator, Catherine Noone has, today (Monday) welcomed the launch by the Minister for Communications of Eircode, the new location codes for Irish addresses.

“This is a vital piece of modern, national infrastructure and it is to be greatly welcomed. At the most basic level, postcodes will make it easier to direct post, but they will also be hugely important in the operation of the ambulance services, the fire brigade, they will greatly assist the Gardaí in their day to day work and they will be of benefit to taxi drivers and other service providers.

“A publicly-owned postcode system is important, and Eircode is compatible with online mapping, satellite navigations systems, and smart phones: this is vital. Eircode will allow us to benefit from modern technology, to utilise facilities available to us and operate in a more efficient manner. Most other European countries already have similar systems, so this is something that is long overdue in Ireland.

“Each household will have their unique postcode by 2015 and, while it has taken some time to get to this point, the conclusion of this project is now in sight. We can look forward to the gains in efficiency and the long-term savings benefit for both the public and private sector that this system will bring”.
