€400k to redevelop Carlingford Castle – Fitzpatrick
11th May 2017 - Peter Fitzpatrick TD
Fine Gael TD for Louth, Peter Fitzpatrick, has warmly welcomed the news that King John’s Castle in Carlingford is to receive €400,000 in funding.
The funding for the development will come from Fáilte Ireland’s Capital Grants Allocation for 2017 to the Office of Public Works (OPW).
“The development of King John’s Castle as an amenity should see a big boost in visitor numbers to the area. It offers stunning views across Carlingford Lough and the Cooley and Mourne Mountains.
“Carlingford is one of the most picturesque parts of Ireland and this investment will be a major boost to the area. It is great to see the heritage of county Louth receiving a major investment.
“This money will be used to enhance the castle’s visitor experience and will appeal to tourists visiting Carlingford, one of Ireland’s finest medieval towns.
“In addition, the project includes the provision of performance infrastructure which will allow for the castle to be used as a setting for cultural events.
“Once the project is completed people will be able to enter the interior of the castle for the first time. In future I hope to see the castle becoming a major platform for arts events and performances.
“As the development of Ireland’s Ancient East continues, I hope to see Carlingford become a cornerstone of the tourism initiative.”
