Fine Gael Kerry Senator, Paul Coghlan, has welcomed the announcement that almost €300,000 in funding has been approved for the development of the Community Centre, at Fossa, Killarney. Senator Coghlan said this development will bring benefits for the whole community as recreational and play areas for all age groups will be delivered.

“The Minister for Environment, Community and Local Government, Phil Hogan TD, has sanctioned the South Kerry Development Partnership Limited to approve funding of €295,396.27, for the development of Fossa Community Centre Ltd. This development will see a playground and recreational area being built on a 0.2ha site at the rear of the Community Centre. Steps to Fossa Wood at the back of the centre will also be installed which will increase access to this magnificent natural amenity.

“These funds are being made available under the under the Village and Countryside Renewal and Development measure of the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013, which aims to improve the quality of life for rural Ireland.

“The total spend on this project will be in the region of €400,000 and it facilitate children and adults with a new area in which to play and relax, having a knock-on positive impact on their physical and mental wellbeing.

“It is crucial that we avoid sedentary lifestyle and that outdoor pursuits are a regular part of our daily living. Obesity and associated conditions such as diabetes and heart disease are on the rise so it is essential that we take good care of our physical and mental health for a long and happy life. The addition of these facilities for Fossa will make doing that easier for the people from local communities.

“The Board of South Kerry Development Partnership Limited must now give final approval for the go-ahead of project. I look forward to work commencing on it and to seeing the people of Fossa enjoying their new amenities.”
