Bruton and Hayes highlight importance of EU for job-creation
It is crucial to send a strong, experienced representative like Brian Hayes to the European Parliament to fight for jobs in Dublin, the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton TD said today. Speaking in Dublin today, Minister Bruton said:
“The European Union is increasingly important for job-creation in Ireland. Most of the multinational companies who set up operations in Ireland do so as a means of accessing the European market. These companies directly and indirectly employ over 250,000 people. Europe is also a hugely important market for the Irish exporting companies who directly and indirectly employ over 300,000 people. And so much of the legislation and regulation – in areas as diverse as competition, health and safety, research and innovation and regional aid – which affect decisions of companies in Ireland on whether to expand their employment originates in Europe.
“Brian Hayes is a strong, experienced representative and has an unparalleled track record in delivering for Ireland in negotiations at EU level. As Minister of State in the Department of Finance, he personally represented Ireland in many of the negotiations over the past three years which delivered major improvements in our economic situation – on issues like the interest rate on our bailout loans, the promissory notes deal, and the new banking supervision structures.
“We have seen major progress in the jobs market in the past two years, with 61,000 jobs added last year and employment growing now in Ireland at the fastest rate in the EU and in the OECD. However we have a long way to go and we must continue to work hard to support the continued jobs growth that we need. Now is a time when we need a strong, experienced voice in the European Parliament to represent the economic interests of the people of Dublin in the European Union. If elected on 23rd May, I know Brian Hayes will be that representative”.
